PIVOTING

The day Shelter in Place was established in San Francisco, we lost 50% of our weddings for the year. As the weeks dragged on, we continued to see postponement after postponement. In a word - we were demoralized. 2020 was supposed to be "our year". 

THE ACTIONS WE TOOK

We decided that the only way we could feel good about ourselves and the future of our business was to use this time productively, by creating work for ourselves in the interim, as well as establishing long term projects for the future. We recognized that we needed to work not just for financial reasons, but for our mental health as well. We spent many hours on the phone brainstorming and finally pinpointed that one of the reasons we became florists is because flowers bring people joy with their beauty, which was greatly needed during a time when everyone was feeling a daily level of stress never seen before.

We began making contactless deliveries in both San Francisco and Grass Valley and the support was inspiring. We've never consistently done deliveries before, so this was a huge pivot for us. We've found that people who wouldn't normally have flowers in their homes were suddenly asking for deliveries, just because having that small bright spot in their homes helped them be a bit happier.  We also recognized how many other small businesses were struggling, and that we wanted to use our floral skills to bring some attention to other businesses in need, as well as some joy to the community. This week, we're going to flower flash businesses in San Francisco and Grass Valley that have been boarded up as a reminder to the community that these businesses are still here, and will continue to be here once this is all over. We hope that once people unexpectedly see the flower installations outside of these businesses, it will serve as a happy moment and a reminder to continue to support places in their community.
